Every life arrives at a moment when a new chapter must be written, not by choice, but by necessity. When the people, certainties, and versions of ourselves that once shaped us are gone, the page ahead is blank, and is now ours alone to fill.
My mother, Blanche, was the steadiest light I knew, present and patient through every unfolding of me and my work. Her passing, swift after a cancer diagnosis, arrived in the middle of the last exhibition I had been building toward. I stopped working and canceled the show to be with her. Upon my return, I found it impossible to resume where I had left off. My perception had shifted, and I was now seeing and feeling the world through a new lens.
Carte Blanche carries her name and its charge. Here, a blank page is not a gift of freedom, but a responsibility. The title is both a dedication and a directive: to continue, to author what comes next, without a voice that once helped to shape it.
My practice has always been held in tension between two equal and opposing forces: color pursued as open exploration, and geometry imposed as ritual and discipline. Together they mirror life itself: structure against surrender, the known against the yet-to-be-discovered.
These new compositions build upon that juxtaposition. Concentric forms converge toward a luminous center, steady beneath grief, transition, and everything life asks us to carry. Around it, circles orbit and expand, suggesting the relationships and forces that continuously shape us; arriving, receding, returning. Still, the center holds.
This body of work invites you to locate your own center, that quiet, luminous space within that remains when everything else has shifted, and to linger there long enough to remember that beginning again is not only necessary, but possible.
